Diabetes is the main cause of death in Mexico. This situation is mainly due to the high consumption of fats by poor and marginal communities, especially in rural areas where basic knowledge on nutrition and healthy life habits are very limited.
Our diabetes program focuses on diabetes and obesity and the development of healthy prevention habits for adults. Parents are also taught the necessary skills to prevent obesity and diabetes in their children. Participants show positive changes in their dietary habits, including a reduced ingestion of junk food, sodas and fats, as well as an increase in fruit and vegetable ingestion. Participants report an increase in physical activity and better biometric conditions as part of the befits obtained from the program.
Besides addressing members of the communities, IMIFAP has carried out workshops on diabetes for medics, with the objective of promoting the exchange of prevention strategies on how to educate patients on the risks and causes of diabetes, as well as the proposal of innovative prevention strategies.
